Role of Youth in Water Management

"Water" is synonymous with "Life" and while there might be a plenty of other beverages available, there is no substitute for water. India with majority of its population in the young age group needs an educated and responsible youth for the preservation of its water resources.

One of the biggest water consuming sectors in the country is agriculture with its dependence on ground water as well as irrigation. In some areas of the county, the groundwater has reached alarmingly low level and the situation is worsening over time. Educated rural youth needs to take initiative to develop new techniques for irrigation to limit the burden on existing irrigation resources and preserve the groundwater. Organic farming as done in the state of Sikkim needs to be adopted country wide to preserve the quality of soil and groundwater as well. More agricultural institutions need to be developed and awareness programs in villages regarding importance of preservation of water need to be organised. Farmers should be made aware about the environment friendly agricultural techniques like choosing crops based on soil type, rainfall received in the region and sowing crop varieties that demand less water.

Youngsters of the nation need to recognize the individual responsibility when it comes to water conservation missions like Clean Ganga. Youth of the country needs to come forward to clean Ganga which is not just associated with one religion but is a lifeline of the country itself with all its religions deriving strength from it. Cleaning the waters of Ganga will fuel economic growth by opening new passages for waterways, offering source of fresh water and helping promote Indian Culture and Heritage by giving a boost to the Indian tourism industry. Ganga serves as the symbol of India's rich heritage and cleaning its waters is a collective responsibility of every citizen with the youth being the flag bearer.

In the world of globalization, more and more luxury products are poured into the country everyday and with the arrival of these products, our dependence on the natural resources like water grows as well. Let's take example of luxury cars our country imports or even builds indigenous.  Everyday more and more households are becoming car owners and the existing owners are buying even more. Each of these cars demand cleaning and maintenance which increases the dependence on water further. The consumer of these resources is again the youth of this country and they need to make sure that they do not overuse these products harming the environment and burdening our water resources.

There are numerous other requirements of water in our day to day lives and the youth while preserving the water should make sure that the others around him or her are aware of water preservation as well.  Role of youth in water management is not just significant but extremely crucial to make sure that the water resources of our country are used in such a way that the present generation can fulfill its needs and so can our coming generations.
